There are a number of people hailing the importance of blogging in today’s world. Not surprisingly, there are also prophets of doom who see the worst in the blogosphere. One of the most active of them is Lee Siegel who published Against the Machine: Being Human in the Age of the Electronic Mob.
Blog enthusiasts have pointed out the blogging have democratized the Internet and freed it from the clutches of the “professionals”. This apparent democratization, however, has brought journalism, particularly online journalism, to the level of popularity without due regard for credibility and accuracy.
Siegel particularly berated online anonymity and the way in which websites and blogs sacrifice the quality of their content just to generate more traffic to their website. Siegel’s arguments against the democratization of information in the Internet may be a bit lopsided in favor of promoting the schemes and systems of Old Media.s
In spite of his flawed arguments, though, there is one thing that Siegel hits right-that is the way that bloggers sacrifice quality over quantity. Managing online content to ensure quality should also be prioritized by bloggers. This way, blogosphere will be protected from worthless content and senseless articles.
