Gannett Starts Move toward Web 2.0

February 9th, 2008 by askweb20

In its efforts to extend its online presence, Gannett decided to bring in Chris Saridakis as its Chief Digital Officer. Interesting title, don’t you think?

No matter how interesting the title is, what’s important is the move of Gannett to expand digital operations. Currently, Gannett holds more than 80 newspapers in the United States. Through the Internet, it seeks to improve its circulation and even improve the way it gathers advertisements.

Previously, Gannett has already started making use of the Internet through CareerBuilder, which connects several related websites together. Together with Tribune, Gannett wants to reach out a larger number of consumers who now prefer the Internet over printed newspapers.

Better late than never. Gannett is perhaps one of the last from the ranks of Old Media to fully integrate Web 2.0 into its operations. Perhaps the sheer number of newspapers it controls managed to keep it afloat through the Web 2.0 revolution until recently.

The media mogul does not even want a small step transition. Rather, it hired a tried and tested Web veteran for its digital expansion. Saridakis’s experience with DoubleClick, and PointRoll among others is definitely the reason why he was hired.

What can we say? Web 2.0 rules!
