Wordpress hired a new employee in the person of Andy Peatling, the developer of BuddyPress, which is an online social networking site built upon WordPress. Peatling has also developed many other applications for social network and open technology sites. With the appointment of Peatling, observers are hinting that Wordpress might implement some changes soon towards becoming a social networking site.
Peatling’s experience includes designing ChickSpeak and BuddyPress, which were developed based on WordPress with multi-user capability. What he did was to move the blog posts to one side and made another page that including a messaging system. He also mentioned about the plugins that are readily available for WordPress.
Although there are already thousands, if not millions of social networking sites in the world, what WordPress might be working on is the possibility of connecting these networks into one super-network through OpenSource software. This way, more and more plugins will be developed that will enable social networking sites to connect with each other.
Given the breakneck speed of software and website development nowadays, we might not need to wait for long before we see WordPress’s efforts bear fruit.
